The Lummi Healing Poles

FUNDRAISING DINNER
AUGUST 5, 2004

The Lummi Tribe, the Trillium Corporation, and Ken and Kathy Hertz invite you to join other Whatcom County residents at a fundraising dinner on August 5, 2004 at the Silver Reef Casino to help support the Lummi Tribe’s 2004 Liberty and Freedom totem pole journey to the Pentagon.  They are the third in a series of totem poles donated by the Lummi Tribe to bring healing to the American Nation following the attacks of 9/11.  The evening will include a silent auction offering Native art and much more.

The Healing Pole in New York:  Sacred ground is common ground

Shortly after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the Lummi Tribe was asked to provide a totem pole to New York to commemorate the tragic events at the World Trade Center.  On September 7, 2002, the Lummi Tribe delivered the 13’6” Healing Pole that was placed in a site designated as a healing  center for the events of 9/11.  The 3,800-mile journey carried the message that “sacred ground is common ground.”

The Honoring Pole in Shanksville:  We have not forgotten

At the request of the people of Shanksville, the Lummi Tribe delivered to Shanksville, Pennsylvania,  the 13-foot Honoring Pole (pictured at left) to commemorate the crash of Flight 93 on September 11, 2001.  The journey culminated in the placement of the Honoring Pole on  September 7, 2003. The theme of the journey, “we have not forgotten,” recognized the heroism of the victims of Flight 93 and of America’s Armed Forces.

The Liberty and Freedom Poles: Unity in Spirit

The Lummi Tribe is now preparing the Liberty and Freedom Poles for placement in Washington, DC.  The  two, 13- foot totem poles, carved in the figure of bears, are connected by the 34’ Arch of Sovereignty, with carved eagles.  The totem poles will be received at the Pentagon on September 19, 2004, and will later be placed in the 9/11 Pentagon Memorial.
